Troupis Hoof n Lur 2019, PGI Arcadia

Troupis represents one of Salveto’s rising stars for sure. In only their 10th vintage, accolades are rolling in. We have represented Troupis since 2015 on the strength of their exquisite expressions of Moschfilero in the Mantinia Plateau in the Pelpoppennese region of Greece. This ancient, aromatic varietal in the expert hands of Yannis troupis has lead their wines that now include several selections. They are now are growing into Assyrtiko and Agiorgitiko.

Hoof n Lur was born through a conversation late one night drinking in the courtyard at Troupis. It represents a look back a Millenia or more when the wines were fermented on their skins and without inoculation, allowing the native yeasts in the vineyard to work their magic. Many refer to this as “Natural Wine” but Yannis likes to say “Low Intervention”.

The vines are sustainably farmed without irrigation and minimal copper sulfite. 2019 graced most of western Europe with perfect weather during the growing season. In Greece, the wines represent the best I’ve ever tasted (June 2019 and March 2020).

We are ecstatic to finally get the first of the wines in the US. The 3rd iteration of Hoof n Lur (named after the method of pruning and replanting to propagate clonal selections) is simply stunning; heady aromatics of lemongrass, blood orange and ginger explode from the glass, followed by a crisp, refreshing palate that is both dry and thirst quenching with bracing acidity. The bright pink hue comes from extended contact with the dark hued skins of the variety and is perfect for the holiday table!
