Both Joana and Antonio Macanita were born in Lisboa. Their father was a native of the Azores (Acores), and their mother was from Alentejo. Despite their family being of an academic orientation, both Joana and Antonio went on to be winemakers.

Antonio’s earliest exposure to wine was treading grapes by foot while on holiday in the Azores.

He had a keen interest in marine biology, but eventually his interest in agriculture outshined this. He decided to attend the Instituto Superior de Agronomia.  Upon graduation, Antonio pursued various internships in vastly different settings including Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, D’Arenberg in Australia and Napa Valley estates Merryvale Vineyards and Rudd Estate.

Joana spent years as a junior gymnast with the national team of Portugal. She had been studying animal sciences when she spent  time at Fita Preta working for her brother. Eventually, both enrolled at the or wine studies.
